5 Minute Initiative: Eminent Domain

Eminent Domain brings pictures to mind of the Federal Government taking control of your land or property for the good of others, whether you like it or not. In this game by Tasty Minstrel Games, you are the government, or at least that is how I look at it, and you are claiming planets whether the inhabitants like it or not.

Maybe not that dramatic, but Eminent Domain is a deck building game with a unique spin of having roles like the game Puerto Rico that keeps the game fast paced with minimal downtime between players. You have various actions you can take as the lead and other players can follow. Ultimate goal, get the most victory points before the end conditions of the game are achieved.

Marty and I discuss the game in this 5 Minute Initiative and the anticipated release of the expansion to the game and what we hope is included to make this great game even better.

  1. I just found out about this podcast. Thanks for talking about Eminent Domain! I'm glad you enjoyed the game - if the biggest complaint people have is the one about the different ships, then I think I have done a pretty good job with the game :)

You mentioned some things you'd like to see in the upcoming expansion, and based on what you said I think you'll be really excited when Escalation gets announced (which will be very soon now - let us get this little Dungeon Roll thing (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelmindes/dungeon-roll-a-dicey-dungeon-delve) out of the way and then you'll hear some news about Escalation!

In brief, I'll tell you this: Escalation WILL contain additional materials to support a 5th player!

Escalation WILL add additional Tech cards and planets, but it will NOT add a new planet TYPE and associated tech stack. Exotica, the next expansion to come out, will handle those tasks.

Escalation really amps up the game, and it's not for the feint of heart. It's really intended for players who are very familiar with the base game. My biggest fear is that players will add Escalation after only a game or two of the base game, and will feel overwhelmed! But for players who are familiar with and really enjoy the base game, Escalation offers LOTS of new approaches to the game.

Oh, and yes... one of Escalation's main features is that there's a difference between the small ships (Fighters), the medium ships (Destroyers), and the large ships (Battlecruisers). :)

Not too long after Escalation, Exotica should come out... and for players who may be overwhelmed by Escalation, that might be a better expansion to add first (it will be a stand alone expansion that can also be combined with Escalation).

Down the road I've got plans for 1 more expansion as well, which would add a new Role (Politics). But I haven't gotten too far into that yet. That'll probably be the last expansion for Eminent Domain - though I've recently had some thoughts on how to do a dice game version as well... we'll have to see how that pans out :)

    1. Thanks for honoring our little podcast with such a great reply. We are very excited by these new expansions. It is everything we were looking for.

But I understand other things need to be taken care of first. In fact, in our next episode we talk about dice games and we give a shout out to Dungeon Roll and this episode will be released while KS is still going.

BTW, the different ships is just a little joke among my gamer friends. No one complained about ;-)
